Students And Teachers

Solution: Betty (Gr. 1, Ms. Moss), Robert (Gr. 2, Ms. Doe), Adam (Gr. 3, Mr. Smith), Kate (Gr. 4, Ms. Park) and Dale (Gr. 5, Mr. Green).

1. Kate is older then three other students: therefore Kate must be Gr. 4 student.  Therefor mark the cell corresponding to Gr. 4 and Kate, and mark off the other possibilities by placing X in the boxes.

2. Mr. Smith teaches neither youngest nor oldest grade: it means Mr. Smith is not teaching Gr. 1 and Gr. 5 (mark X in cells corresponding to Mr. Smith and Gr. 1, and Mr. Smith and Gr. 5)

3. Mr. Smith teaches neither Kate nor Dale: mark X in corresponding cells.  Kate is Gr. 4, thus it means that Mr. Smith is not teaching Gr. 4, place X there as well.

4. Ms. Doe is Robert's teacher: mark the corresponding cell with diamond, and mark X for other choices.

5. Ms. Moss teaches grade 1: Mark with diamond corresponding cell and mark Xs for other choices. Let's do the same for #6.

6. Mr. Green is Dale's teacher,
Since Dale's teacher is not Ms. Moss, Dale is not Gr. 1, mark it with X, and from clue 4 we can conclude that Ms. Moss is not Rober's teacher, we can mark it with X as well:

7. Adam is older than Robert: Robert is not Gr. 1, therefore he could be Gr. 2, 3, 4, or 5.  Since Adam is older than Robert, Adam cannot be Gr. 1 nor 2.  Mark these two possibilities with Xs.

8. The fifth student's name is Betty, the fifth teacher's name is Ms. Park, and Dale is the oldest student: the only possibility for Betty is that she is Gr. 1, see the table for clue #7.  Dale is Gr. 5, therefore Adam is Gr. 3 and Robert is Gr. 2.
Since Betty is Gr. 1, her teacher is Ms. Moss, mark the corresponding cell and mark X in all the other possibilities.

From the table above we can see that Mr. Smith is Adam's teacher, and Ms. Park is Kate's teacher.
Thus our solution: Betty (Gr. 1, Ms. Moss), Robert (Gr. 2, Ms. Doe), Adam (Gr. 3, Mr. Smith), Kate (Gr. 4, Ms. Park) and Dale (Gr. 5, Mr. Green).
